Training Details
This class is geared towards members of the Public Safety community and specifically tailored to teach attendees how to start, maintain, and operate a UAS program within the agency/department. The 8-hour session will consist of a combination of classwork and lots of hands-on flying experience.
Building Your UAS Program
UAS Operations for Public Safety Applications will expose attendees to the various applications of unmanned aircraft in emergency scenarios, and how they may fit their respective agencies. The training will help students identify and define their UAS agency's objectives, ensuring their subsequent efforts support their specific program and the practical completion of identified mission sets.
Attendees will examine current laws and regulations and develop a preemptive approach to regulatory compliance, including Part 107 rules adherence.
UAS Deployment for Emergencies
This portion of the curriculum covers all aspects of how to conduct UAS operations in emergencies properly. The tasks and procedures discussed are thorough and specific to the emergency at hand. We cover your UAS dispatch policy, IC reporting, and identifying yourself and your UAS equipment.
Our instruction comes from our instructors' years of experience in flying tactical missions for public safety. Here we provide the most comprehensive, scenario-based, hands-on training to educate the operator on the proper deployment of UAS in emergencies.

Derrick Ward, Director of Public Safety, DSLRPros
Our lead instructor Derrick Ward has 33 years of experience as a firefighter for the Los Angeles City Fire Department. Derrick has been certified for multiple firefighting specialties and is a Certified Fire Instructor. With his experience and credentials, Derrick has gained critical insights that allow him to lead emergency aerial response missions in numerous situations.
Derrick understands how to incorporate UAS capabilities for any use case and has been using knowledge from his 1,400+ hours of UAS flight time to advance the scope of drone operations in the United States. Derrick is sharing his expertise and deep experience to help organizations carry out UAS operations safely, legally, and effectively.
Experienced with working with students of all levels, Derrick knows how to tailor-fit his instruction based on his students’ needs. He has helped provide training for more than 500 enterprise operators and counting under DSLRPros’ training programs. Derrick is looking forward to helping you and your team make the most out of your drones and UAS program.
