Criteria Used

First, how far can the drone travel, and what features does the pilot have to control it with? The camera is the eye of the drone, determining the quality of photos and videos captured, so naturally, that comes in second in priority. Note that we have specifically left out long range drones with flexible payload options, like the Matrice 350 RTK where you can pick from a wide range of Zenmuse series cameras and other choices you can attach to it. Instead, we’ve looked at the drones that came with the cameras fixed onto the body.

Battery life plays a pivotal role as it dictates how long a drone can stay airborne to perform tasks. Longer battery life coupled with the transmission technology allows drones to venture farther without losing connection, so that’s also a key factor. Then there are the regulations, especially for users in the US, given all the politics around who manufactures the drone, and how safe their data is. We have also left out the gasoline-powered endurance drones that are typically used for surveillance of offshore oil rigs. These tend to be bulky and require more maintenance. We’ve focused on drones that are popularly used for mainland commercial and recreational tasks.

Foreign-manufactured drones are increasingly coming under more scrutiny in the U.S. While DJI has already made a name for itself around the world and proven the quality of its drones, it’s also facing similar legislative headwinds locally.
